USM report: juvenile records not automatically sealed

A study done at the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service found that sealed records at 18 is in fact a misconception. Worse, this misinformation is held and spread by those in the criminal justice system. There is a short profile of a young man from Aroostook county that encountered this issue when Human Resources discovered it. Also troubling is that when HR or others that can access the information see a record, those that are juvenile and those as adults are almost indistinguishable.

There is a panel discussion at University of Maine School of Law this afternoon in Portland.
